7 Menstrual Myths Busted: What You Really Need to Know

Periods have long been surrounded by taboos, half-truths, and myths passed down through generations. Whether it’s something you overheard at school or advice wrapped in cultural beliefs or in my case, do not dos from my very own Mother,  it’s time to separate fact from fiction. At ITS4U, we believe knowledge is power—and when it comes to menstrual health, you deserve nothing but the truth.

Let’s bust some of the most common menstrual myths so you can take control of your period with confidence and clarity.

MYTH 1: You Can’t Get Pregnant During Your Period

BUSTED: While it’s less likely, pregnancy during your period is still possible.
Sperm can survive in the body for up to 5 days, and if you have a shorter cycle, ovulation could occur soon after menstruation ends. So if you have sex toward the end of your period, there’s still a chance of conception.

Bottom line: Always use protection if you’re not planning a pregnancy—period or not.

MYTH 2: I’ll LOSE MY VIRGINITY when I use a Menstrual Cup

BUSTED: Let’s start with the truth: virginity is a social concept—not a medical condition.

Using a menstrual cup does not take away your virginity. Inserting a cup may stretch or tear the hymen, but so can activities like biking, dancing, horse riding, gymnastics or even stretching. The state of your hymen doesn’t define your worth, your experiences, or your identity.

If you're new to internal period products, that's totally okay. Many first-time users find starting with a smaller, softer cup helps ease the transition.  Alongside with body-safe lubricants, the insertion can be a lot smoother. Take your time, go at your own pace, and focus on what feels right for your body.

MYTH 3: Tampons Can Get Lost Inside You

BUSTED: Nope! There's literally nowhere for a tampon to “get lost.”

Your cervix blocks the path to the rest of your body, so a tampon can only go so far. Worst case? The string gets tucked in or the tampon shifts a bit higher. It’s nothing a gentle tug or push comes to shove, a trip to your nearest GP can’t fix.

Tip: Relax, take deep breaths, and bend down slightly if you’re having trouble removing it.

MYTH 4: You Shouldn’t Exercise During Your Period

BUSTED: Exercise can actually help relieve cramps, reduce bloating, and improve your mood!
While it’s okay to take it easy, if you’re feeling tired, movement—like yoga, stretching, or a brisk walk—can boost circulation and release endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers.

Listen to your body, not old myths. Some movement may be just what you need.

MYTH 5: Menstrual Blood Is Dirty or Toxic

BUSTED: Menstrual blood is just blood and uterine lining—completely natural and nothing to be ashamed of.

It’s not “dirty” or “impure.” This myth is deeply rooted in stigma and can be harmful to people’s understanding of their bodies.

Your period is a sign your body is working as it should. Don’t let shame shape your self-care.

MYTH 6: Only Women Get Periods

BUSTED: When we talk about periods, it’s important to remember this: not all women menstruate, and not everyone who menstruates is a woman.
Trans men, non-binary people, and gender-diverse individuals can also get periods. Language matters—and being inclusive helps everyone feel seen and supported.

At ITS4U, we support everyone with a period—no matter their gender.

MYTH 7: You Can’t Go Swimming on Your Period

BUSTED: Yes, you can swim during your period—just not with a pad. Pads aren’t designed for water and will quickly absorb it, making them bulky, ineffective, and uncomfortable.

For swimming, tampons or menstrual cups are your best options. Both sit internally and are safe, discreet, and effective in the water. Menstrual cups, in particular, offer leak-free protection for up to 12 hours—perfect for long beach days or poolside lounging.

While water pressure may temporarily slow your flow, it doesn't stop it entirely. So having proper protection is still important, especially when you get out of the water.

Don’t miss out on pool days or beach trips. Just choose the right product and dive in with confidence.
