The real talk you wish came with your first pad.
Let’s be honest: most of us were handed a pamphlet, a pad, and a lot of awkward silence when we first learned about periods. The basics were there—what a period is, when it happens, maybe even a diagram—but so much was left out.
At ITS4U, we believe period care should be taught with clarity, confidence, and care. So here’s the real, unfiltered guide to everything you didn’t learn in school—but should’ve.
1. Your Period Doesn’t Always Show Up On Schedule
Textbooks love to say cycles last 28 days. We learnt this from the very onset of puberty lessons when we were in school. Reality check? That’s just an average.
Your cycle might be 21 days, 35 days, or somewhere in between—and that’s totally normal. Stress, sleep, travel, and diet can also throw off your timing. It doesn’t mean something’s “wrong.”
Tip: Use a period tracker app to learn your body’s natural rhythm. Knowledge is power!
2. Not All Period Blood Is Red
Sometimes it’s brown. Or dark. Or a little clumpy. That’s not “weird”—it’s just oxidized blood or the shedding of your uterine lining. Color and texture can vary throughout your cycle.
However, if you notice a sudden change in color, smell, continuous bleeding over a sustained period of time ( a month or more) or experience severe discomfort, please do not hesitate to head to your family doctor for a friendly chat.
3. Period Pain Isn’t “Just in Your Head”
Cramps are real—and for some, they’re debilitating. You might have heard that popping a pill or “just walking it off” will help. But severe pain might be a sign of something more, like endometriosis or PCOS.
If your cramps interfere with school, work, or daily life, it’s worth getting checked out.
4. You Don’t Need to Use “Feminine Wash”
Your vagina is self-cleaning. Over-washing or using scented products can actually throw off your pH and lead to infections like BV or yeast infections.
Stick to warm water or a gentle, unscented wash on the outer area (vulva). That's it. No perfume needed.
5. You Have More Period Product Options Than You Were Told
Remember that health class diagram with only pads and tampons? There’s so much more today.
Here’s a quick rundown:
-
Pads: Great for beginners and sleep
-
Tampons: Good for swimming, discreet wear
-
Menstrual Cups: Reusable, eco-friendly, long-lasting
-
Period Underwear: Comfy and leakproof
-
Discs: Flexible and great for heavy flow or longer wear
Mix and match based on your flow, lifestyle, and comfort level. There’s no one-size-fits-all.
6. Your Mood, Skin, and Energy Are All Connected to Your Cycle
Your period isn’t just about bleeding. Hormonal changes throughout your cycle affect your energy, mood, productivity, and even skin.
Ever notice you’re super confident one week and in full cry-mode the next? That’s your cycle talking. Understanding it can help you plan better and give yourself grace.
Track your full cycle—not just your period days—to truly know your body.
7. It’s Okay to Talk About Your Period
Shame has no place in your cycle. Periods are natural, and talking about them helps normalize the experience for everyone. Whether it’s asking for a pad at work or chatting with friends, sharing experiences with your own mum, open conversation makes a big difference. After all, our period experiences are all a little different. No one formulae fits all.
At ITS4U, we believe period talk is power talk. You're not alone—and you never have to be silent.
Final Thought: You Deserve Better
Better education. Better products. Better conversations.
And most of all, better care.
